Obituary of Stewart Galloway
It is with heavy hearts that the family of John “Stewart” Galloway Sr. announce his passing on December 10, 2024, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick. Born on July 25, 1937, in Dumbarton, Scotland, Stewart was the son of the late Samuel and Alice (Stewart) Galloway.
Together with his bride Ann, Stewart left Scotland in 1965 on a ship destined for Canada in pursuit of a better future. They landed in Montague, Prince Edward Island and eventually settled in their home on Dineen Crescent in Hampton, New Brunswick, where they raised their family and became active members of the community.
Stewart was a faithful member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and was a much-adored weekly Mass reader. Stewart also dedicated his time to the Finance Committee and other Church callings. Passionate about sports, he was the President of the Hampton Youth Soccer Association, President of the Hampton Curling Club, and a competitive curler. He was also an active Board member for the Dr. VA Snow Center in Hampton. He believed in giving back to the community that he took such pride in and gave him so much in return.
Besides family, Stewart’s other love was time spent in the garden exercising his green thumb either at his home garden or at the family cottage in Montague. He enjoyed the serenity of his surroundings including the beautiful view of the Montague River, relaxation, visits from family and friends and the refreshments that often followed. An avid reader, Stewart immersed himself in his books and enjoyed the solitude and knowledge that was gained from between the pages. Having served in the British Merchant Marines in his younger years, a passion for travel and ethnic cuisine was cultivated to the enjoyment of his family.
Stewart is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Ann (McGlinn) of Hampton. Children: Stewart (Karla) of Halifax, NS; David (Francine) of Upper Tantallon, NS; Gillian Hull (Colin) of Rothesay, NB.
