Obituary of Gordon Mercer

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad, Gordon Lloyd Mercer on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Predeceased by his wife, Madeline (Hodgin), son David Michael, parents Arthur and Viola, grandson Michael, son-in-law Keith White, brothers Sterling, Warren, Chesley, and Edmund; sisters Grace, Beatrice, Jessie, Dorothy, and Eleanor.

Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of memories, his sons: Ronald (Caroline), and Joseph; his daughters: Nancy, Susan (Randy), and Catherine; grandchildren: Mark, Daniel, Damian, Amanda, Ryan, Jonathan, Joanna, and Erin; great-grandchildren: Halley, Lucy, Evelyn, Michael, Leo, and Alex, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and dear friends.

Gordon was born December 20, 1932, in Bloomfield, New Brunswick, where he attended school and met his future wife, Madeline, who lived in the same community. In 1948, at the age of 15, Gordon started working with CN Rail, driving spikes, and from there worked his way up through the ranks to District Supervisor of Maintenance. Gordon was very dedicated to his work and took great pride in doing an exceptional job, very rarely missing a day of work. With CN Rail, Gordon and his family moved from Hampton to Saint John, NB, to Corner Brook, NL to St. John’s, NL, and finally to Moncton, NB, where he retired in May 1990 after working 42 years. Shortly after retirement, Gordon and Madeline moved back to Hampton, the place they always called home.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to the amazing staff of Trinity Court, Rocmaura Nursing Home, and to his nieces, Linda Davidson and Theresa Tewfik, who made numerous visits to the Nursing Home to provide comfort, care, and love.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541) 1063 Main Street Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Thursday, November 28, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Friday, November 29, 2024 at St, Alphonsus Catholic Church, 22 Church Street, Hampton, NB. Interment will take place in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery.
