After Muriel graduated from Normal school in 1943, She taught in local schools until she went west in1955.
Every weekend Muriel returned home from teaching. Sunday after supper Father allowed me at 16 or 17 years of age to drive Muriel to her boarding house to be ready to teach the next day.
Muriel had a boyfriend before she went west. Before he visited, Muriel had the home living area cleaned, waxed, and polished. The boys, after doing their chores in the barn, came into the house with their smelly clothes and boots. Muriel did not allow the smelly boots and clothes in the house. In no uncertain terms, get these smelly things out of the house. The boys obeyed.
Often one would find Muriel off in a corner reading a book. Her important job was to clean the separator discs and pails after the milk was separated into cream and skim milk morning and night. This involved collecting water from the well, heating the water on a wood burning stove and cleaning the film of cream from each of the many disks. The pails had to be spotlessly clean as well. Selling cream was the main source of family income.
Muriel was a great sister, she was an asset to home, community, and country.
