Today we gather to honour, remember, and sadly, say goodbye to the best big brother in the world, John Stuart Calvert.
So many wonderful memories have been popping up for me lately, and I’d like to share a couple of them here....
One song, from our earlier years, will ALWAYS remind me of my brother John, and I have such a wonderful flood of memories come swarming in whenever I hear it on the radio. The song is, If You Want It”, by Badfnger. When we were kids, after dinner was over on a Sunday evening, we would all play monopoly as a family. And I will never forget, if John had a property that one us of, usually me LOL, wanted or needed in the game, he would tease me by holding it up, and waving it in the air, and sing: “if you want it, here it is, come and get it, but you’d better hurry cause it’s going fast” LOL. For me, that song will always make me remember those fun times.
One other, truly wonderful memory shouldn’t surprise most of you, if you really knew John, you must know, John was extremely caring, loving, and protective of those he loved. He would help without making any fuss, or fanfare, if you needed him, he would just be there! When I was really young, and we lived in Sussex, I would often be outside playing, either in the yard, or in the driveway, skipping rope, or whatever. One of our neighbours was a bit of a bully, and if I was outside by myself, he would often come over and be a bit of a bully towards me. This happened often for some time, until suddenly one day, Jimmy came over, and started being a pain, and then suddenly, out of the blue, he would just turn around and run home looking scared. Even though I was pretty young, I thought it was weird. And then that started happening more and more often, he would just take off. One of of these occasions, something made me turn around and look behind me, and there was my big brother John, just quietly and calmly walking away, not saying a word. I asked him what he was doing and he said, oh nothing! So, the next time that Jimmy came over, just before he ran away again, I looked behind me, and sure enough, there was my guardian Angel big brother, just quietly standing behind me. He smiled at me, and then just quietly turned around and walked back to what he had been doing.
Because of the loving and protective man he was in life, I firmly believe, that he will be even more protective of all of us that he loved so much, while he’s up in heaven. John was our Guardian Angel while he walked the earth, and now he is our Guardian Angel in heaven. I miss you John, far more than can ever be expressed in mere words!
