Obituary of Jean Ann Hartlen

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jean Ann Hartlen, of Hampton on Monday, August 14th, 2023, at the age of 99 years. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Heather; her grandchildren children, Ashley and Kelsey (Alex), great-grandchildren, Paityn and Landon; her sister Phylis and numerous other family members and friends.

Jean was born on January 31st, 1924, to the late Edward and Daisy (Warren) Carroll of Halifax and was the eldest of 9 children. She met the love of her life, the boy next door James Alexander Hartlen and wed in 1940. Jim and Jean relocated to Quebec where Jim served in the navy during the war raising their young family. After the war, Jim and Jean moved to Saint John spending many years developing friendships and deepening their love for the sport of curling at Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club.

They moved to Hampton in 1962 and built their house overlooking the Kennebecasis River. They welcomed their youngest son, Jon Anthony (Tony), who later cared for Jean. After Jim's death, Jean relied on her faith to embrace peace and positivity, volunteering within the community. She was selfless, giving her time generously to many causes and organizations. Jean was named Lady of the Year for her social sponsor work for five chapters of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She served as a senior goodwill ambassador, minister of hospital visitations, chaired the Zi Zeta Benevolent fund, served as a town councillor, and was a founding member of the Hampton food basket and Meals on Wheels. One of her longest volunteer commitments was serving as Ms. Claus during Hampton's Holiday Celebrations

Jean was awarded a commemorative medal for the 125th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, named a Paul Harris Fellow - the highest award presented by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and bestowed the Queen's Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee awards. Jean’s active involvement in various aspects of her community is evident, but she loved nothing more than hosting her friends and family for parties, gardening, polishing her silver, pressing, and starching linens,  and most of all her family.

Jean was predeceased by her husband Jim, her son Tony, and siblings, Bernice, Colleen, Thelma, Mona, Patricia, Edward, and Kenneth.

Visiting will be held on Friday, August 18th from 4:00-7:00 p.m., at Reids Funeral Home located at 1063 Main St, Hampton, NB.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church located at 22 Church St, Hampton NB. A private interment will follow the service, and a celebration of life will be held at Reid's.

Donations in memory of Jean can be made to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.
