Obituary of Len Eaves

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Leonard “Len” Eaves announces his sudden passing which occurred on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Vancouver, BC on July 28, 1942, the second son of 5 children of the late David & Edith (Sheppard) Eaves.

Len was a proud Canadian who had the opportunity to live, work and travel from coast to coast throughout the course of his 82 years. He was committed to the service of Queen and country through his 20 years of service in the RCMP where he was awarded Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee Medal for service in 1977.

Len was equally committed to his family, friends, neighbors and the communities he supported, was supported by, and lived in. He was a devoted husband and son, a proud father, a loving brother and a loyal friend.

Len was highly intelligent and extremely creative. A former athlete, avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisher, farmer and formidable horseman. He was a maker, fixer, creator and collector of a broad assortment of curiosities.

Everyone who knew Len, and many that didn't, were greeted by a friendly chat, a story and a laugh. These were the best of days. On bad days he was there to listen and support with wisdom and empathy and to offer help in whatever form was needed.

On the worst of days or in the middle of a crisis Len was the man that you wanted by your side to help uphold you and to look into the face of what was coming or what had already arrived. He was able to show up, stand fast, speak comfort or say nothing. Whatever was needed.

Len lived a full life. A life with love, intention, honor, purpose and gratitude and he will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who loved him.

Len is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Rosamond (Shaw) Eaves of Hampton, NB; son, Michael Eaves (Sherri Riley) of Halifax, NS; daughter, Carla Dresser (Darren) of Vancouver, BC; brothers: Floyd Eaves (Rosemary) of Grimsby, ON, Vernon Eaves of Surrey, BC; sisters: Dianne Haughie (Brian) of Hamilton, ON and Marilyn Briscoe (Bill) of Saskatoon, SK. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Lilla Cousins, Deborah Erwin (Donnie), and Anne Marie Shaw; brothers-in-law: Eric Shaw (Dorothy), Charles Shaw (Marie), Grant Shaw, and Dean Shaw (Mary) as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, friends, neighbours and community members including the Hammond River Grapevine Group.

In addition to his parents, Len was predeceased by his brothers-in-law: Avard Shaw, Wayne Shaw and Emerson Cousins; and sisters-in-law: Melita Campbell (Freddie) and Valerie Carson; nephews: Alan Cousins, Emerson Cousins, Jeremy Shaw as well as many dear friends.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where a private family visitation will be held. A celebration of Len’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 2:00pm from Reid’s Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
