Obituary of Sylvia Campbell

It is with great sadness that the family of Sylvia Campbell announce her passing on July 19th, 2024 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Sylvia was born August 16, 1941, the daughter of Walter & Norah (Donkin) Scribner.

Sylvia was born in Montreal but grew up in the city of Saint John from a very early age. After graduating from Saint John Vocational School in 1959 she married Mel on April 7th, 1960. In 1972 Sylvia and Mel decided to pack up their three boys and move from Saint John to the beautiful countryside town of Hampton where they both remained. The two were married for 60 years until Mel’s passing on November 24th, 2020.

Over the course of Sylvia’s life, she was a stay at home mom having the tough but great job of raising three boys.  She beat a battle with stage 4 breast cancer and when her mother and mother-in-law were unable to live on their own in their later years she thought nothing of moving them into her and Mel’s home to care for them. Over the years Sylvia could always be found helping out with the local elections, she was a past member of the Breast Ahoy Dragon Boat team as well as a past member of the Red Hat Society. Sylvia was also a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Hampton.

Sylvia is survived by her 3 sons: Phillip from Alberta, Clay from Saint John, and Eric (Desiree) also from Alberta along with six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Sylvia was pre-deceased by her parents and one brother Wally.

Sylvia’s wishes were to keep her late husband’s ashes at home with her opting for a double burial at her time of passing. The ceremony will be a private one held at Reid’s Funeral Home (1063 Main Street, Hampton) followed by the burials at the Hampton Rural Cemetery at a future date.

Our family would like to deeply thank all the staff at the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital for the comfort given to our mother during her final days.

If you would like to make a donation it can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
