Obituary of Gerry McGrath

It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald “Gerry” Leonard McGrath announce his passing which occurred on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the Shannex – Tucker Hall, Saint John, NB. Born in Saint John, NB on August 26, 1937, he was the son of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Walsh) McGrath.

Gerry and his beloved late wife, Nancy, returned to Hampton in 1997 where they have been blessed with many, many wonderful and cherished friends and neighbours. Gerry was a proud member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and, over the years, was involved with many volunteer organizations ranging from Little League to Youth Drama and Alternative Measures. He loved woodworking, golf, and cards, successfully winning at Cribbage until his final days.

Gerry is survived by his children: Trudy McGrath (Kevin Duff) of Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Nancy McGrath (Daniel Crabbe) of Lake George, NB and Sean McGrath (Stephanie) of Lower Coverdale, NB. He was “Grampy Gerry” and “Papa Gerry” to his grandchildren: Emily Duff, Sam McGrath (Micalah), Sydney McGrath, Nate Crabbe, Ben Duff, and Kristy Crabbe and his five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Marion Lenihan and brother Bernard McGrath (Eileen) both of Saint John, NB; sister-in-law Hazel Whittaker of Hampton, NB; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy McGrath (Whittaker); and sister Ethel LeBlanc.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 2:00PM from Reid’s Funeral Home with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in the spring at St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery, Hampton, NB.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Shannex-Tucker Hall. Their gentle and attentive care were a great comfort to Gerry and the family over the past two years.
