Obituary of Shirley Joan Douglas

Our beautiful mom, Shirley Joan Douglas (Harrison), passed away so very peacefully on February 17, 2024, with her children by her side.

Shirley is survived by her kids, Jeff (Ana Diez), and Stacy (DJ Hanninen); her treasured Grandchildren (Connor and Logan), her adored sister (Verna Webb), and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved so dearly.

Her beloved husband, Lloyd Douglas, her brothers and sisters, and her father, Ralph Harrison, and her mother Sybil are all waiting for her on the other side.

Shirley was born in New Jerusalem, NB, on November 15, 1940, the baby of seven children. The Harrisons were the most loving and close knit family you could ever imagine. Sunday afternoons were singing hymns around the piano, first in Jerusalem and later in Hampton. She never forgot those hours.

Shirley was a dedicated and committed community member: As a member of the Truro Lions’ Club, she brought the Lions’ Quest anti-bullying campaign  to Truro and area schools, and her work creating and managing Lion’s Radio Bingo in Truro and in helping other clubs across the province do the same, resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing into community service.

She was an active member of the St. Andrews United Church.

Shirley was a selfless, loving, giving, gentle person. Family was everything.

She and Lloyd created a home and a childhood that was safe and warm; A space where all we had to be was who we were - that was always enough. They showed us what unconditional love and compassion looked like. They gave us confidence and helped us love ourselves. We know now, what an incredible gift they gave us.

She was the most amazing mom.

Mom’s life journey was impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers: Paula and Eric Morine, and Peggy Silver. We are also so extremely thankful for the amazing care and compassion demonstrated by the Emergency Department staff at Valley Regional Hospital.

‘Wasn’t That a Party’, mom?

It was. And now it’s time for you to join your husband, family and friends who passed before you.

You have missed them so much and now - as sad as this loss is - we are happy for you..

May the tea pot be ever on.

Mom’s body has been entrusted to White’s Funeral Home, Kentville. Condolences can be made online. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.
