Obituary of Victor Whittaker
It is with deep sadness that the family of Victor Douglas Whittaker, loving husband of Valerie Totten, announce his passing on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB on July 26, 1950, he was a son of the late Norman and Elizabeth (Garnett) Whittaker.
As a young boy, Victor was invited to compete on a high-level gymnastics team. He was a labourer by trade and worked for NBTel for many years travelling the province of NB. He enjoyed seeing our beautiful province. He loved all things outdoors, as a young father he took great pleasure in showing his girls how to hunt, fish, and snare. He and Valerie spent many hours canoeing or out on the trails on the bike or hunting. He hunted with his brothers all his life, and he talked and reminisced about the good times they all had right till the end. He also loved to grow things, from huge gardens in his younger days to single tomato plants on the deck. It didn’t matter to him. He always found joy in feeding his birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, they were almost tame. And he was a regular at the Bingo Halls! He loved going (and winning sometimes) and enjoyed seeing the people and chatting with them. He also enjoyed bowling and playing cards, especially cribbage. He was really funny, always cracking jokes, and making funny comments. Elvis was his favourite singer and with his own head of dark hair and sideburns, he loved to sing along (he even sounded like him).
He will be greatly missed by his sidekick Jack. When dad was in the hospital last year for 2 months, Jack rarely ate. He spent most of his time at the top of the stairs waiting for his daddy to come home. He was a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend to so many. He loved people, from the very young to the very old.
Victor is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Valerie Totten; daughters: Kelly (Norman) Dempster of Baxters Corner, NB and Tammy (Chris Moore) Kinney of Quispamsis, NB; step-son Cliffton (Kim) Donally of Javin Hill, NB; grandchildren: Heather, Gregory, Jessica, Brody, Tyler, Zachariah, Delilah, Kasha and Lance; great-grandchildren: Vivian and Nolan; brothers: Donald (Susan) Whittaker and Brent (Gwen) Whittaker; sister Dugna (Rick) Howe; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Victor was also predeceased by his first wife Geraldine (Deanie), infant daughter Heather and brother Faryl Whittaker.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 4 to 7 PM.
