Believe it or not I thought about him yesterday after not having lived in Hampton for the last 30 years! I will never forget his whistle. I picked him up on Rothesay avenue on the way home one day. Here he was thumbing while holding onto a piece of plywood! So we loaded it onto the back of my truck and loaded Nernie in the cab. "Thanks Turkey!! (Urquie the Turkey he called me). He used to stop and talk to me at the store I worked in at the mall in Hampton. Onward and upward old friend.
-JIM URQUHART.

Dear Winston , Marilyn , Steven , Kim , Family and Friends , Please accept our love , prayers and condolences on the passing away of Vernon . You all have wonderful memories to cherish in your hearts forever. So happy that Vernon got to live his last days at the Dr Snow Centre . Vernon was a big part of our Community and he certainly enjoyed the live musical entertainment , going on outings in the Snow Bus , attending Church services with one of his favourite friends Rev. Mary Wanamaker , walks outside in our beautiful Gardens, sitting in the Sunshine , having chats with Harvey & Gina MacLeod , and many visitors , telling his stories , keep me updated on the news , listening to CBC radio , making little funny comments and jokes for all of us to enjoy. Vernon was one of a kind, one had to love him . Rest In Peace Vernon! You will
Be dearly missed ! Blessings and Love , Gloria Baird and Family

Sorry for the loss of Vern. I had the pleasure to serve Vern at Tops he was always there when I came in for my shift and he would say good afternoon Patty Duke , that was my nickname from Vern . I visited Vern a couple of times when he was at St.joes Hospital and sat and chatted for awhile that man had a head full of knowledge. RIP VERN

Nernie blessed me in many ways - long after our chats on the morning drive to SJ. He was the only person I’ve ever looked for to pickup for a drive. A great companion, full of curiosity, wit and wonder! He was a great man and will be missed.

Nernie will be missed by many. I always searched for him along my way to Hampton when I was younger and my dad would pick him up from time to time. He was always such a nice man. I grew older and also had the chance to grace his presence when I began to drive. My condolences to Vernon’s family and friends.

Vernon was a unique individual we learned to know and enjoy during the many times we picked him up on his way to Saint John. We never asked Vernon where he was going, we knew to drive him to TOP’S. Vernon always kept us up-to-date on Hampton news. He will be missed by many folks in Hampton.

I'm sad to see another Hampton Icon pass. Nernie was a staple at Snow's during the day & Friday nights. First memories of Nernie was working at Bud's Irving restaurant. I've picked him up many times over the years. I remember my brother Ian saying he picked up Nernie hitchhiking to Quispamsis for a sale on a bag of potatoes. There were times he would try to get people to drop him off at the place he was going whether we were going there or not. My thoughts are with his families.

My deepest sympathy to the Keirstead family. I have many fond memories of Nernie from many chats I had with him over the years. When my family moved to Hampton, Vernon was the first person to call on us welcoming us to Hampton. He was all dressed up in a suit and tie and looked very sharp. He will be greatly missed.

It is Hampton' s loss not to be seeing Nernie (aka VG; Vern; Ernie) around anymore. We have all those memories noted in his beautifully written obituary and many more from early years in Hampton and at our cottage at Belleisle where Nernie was a not infrequent visitor after church on Sundays. And again, he could get there faster than anyone just by using his thumb - door to door delivery! May he rest in peace being able to see clearly a huge plate of 'TT' from Tops.

Dear Vernon - I always got such a kick out of you and your dry jokes and comments. Your beautiful deep bass voice really stood out in the HUC choir. Cheryl will be glad to have you join in with her heavenly choir along with Stan, Marilyn, and my sweet Don to name a few! Rest easy old buddy… you were one of a kind and will be missed by so many who knew you!
