Obituary of Selby Eugene Garland

It is with great sadness that the family of Selby Eugene Garland, age 89, announce his passing which occurred on Saturday, December 31, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Bristol’s Hope, NL on November 8, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Taylor) Garland.

Selby is remembered by his loving wife Sylvia Garland of Hampton, NB; brothers: Jim (Anne) Garland and Eric (Marlene) Garland; sister Judy Murray; children: Ceicilanne Mills, Ralph (Paula) Garland, Kim (Tim) Griffin, Jack (Loney) Garland, Tammy Price, Kathey Rankine, Hank (Darlene) Garland and Chrissy Bennett; grandchildren: Tasha, Jason, Josh, Noah, Jessie, Ainsely, Miles, Tova, Bianca, Justin, John, Drew, Sumner, Emmerson, Garland, Matt, Mandy, Selby, Roxy, Billie Jo, Jr, Katie and Gracie; 37 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Selby was predeceased by his first wife Edna Garland (nee Northrup); infant son Selby; and stepson Jeremy Bennett.

In his spare time, Selby loved playing darts and cards with his friends. He was very fond of old cars, trucks and anything with an engine. He moved to Saint John at the age of 14 where he continued his studies in mechanics at Saint John Vocation School. He worked with his father at McCormick & Zatzman’s fisheries and at the winter port. Later in life, Selby worked as an assistant light housekeeper on Partridge Island and farmed in Bloomfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023, at 2:00PM from Reids Funeral Home.
