Obituary of Dorothy Smith
It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Smith announce her passing which occurred on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre, Hampton, NB. Born in Moncton, NB, on November 9, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Delpha and Eva (Leger) O’Brien.
Dorothy is survived by her children Kim Rumson of Saint John, NB, Rhonda Rumson of Rothesay, NB, and Kyle Rumson or Ripples, NB; stepchildren Debbie Tibbetts of Saint John, Pam Painter of Saint John, Brian Smith of Cassidy Lake, and Thom (Carrie) Smith of Moncton; sister Gail (Richard) Arthurs; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband, Ronald Smith.
Our mother, in her early years, always enjoyed sports. She loved to watch hockey and always cheered the Canadian teams on. She was a “bit” of a perfectionist. She only did things if she did them well and both bowling and softball were her thing. She had such pride in her home and loved the Hampton community. It was very rare that she left Hampton but each year at Christmas, her favourite time of the year, she would make the trip to Saint John to go shopping. She enjoyed shopping for her entire family and wrapping and decorating each gift “just so.” She loved to cook and made sure there was enough to feed an army, except when it came to her gravy and dill pickles. She had to ration gravy and pickles, as we all couldn’t get enough. She enjoyed music of all sorts, and if a “Mom and Ronnie” song came on, no matter who was there, they would jump up and start dancing. Mom LOVED animals of all sorts and would do anything to protect the animals. She had her “ways”, but we know, family was everything to Mom.
Back in 2015, Mom became a resident of Dr. V. A. Snow Centre with her love, Ronnie. She and he gained an extended family there. It was wonderful to see the twinkle in her eye whenever she was exchanging banter and teasing with the staff. We will never be able to thank the “Snow Family” enough for the love and care they provided and will be forever grateful.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where public visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, from 6:00 to 9:00PM. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held from Reid’s Chapel at 11:00AM on Thursday, August 5, 2021. The interment will take place at Barnesville Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery following the service.
