Forgive me for not getting to this sooner but please accept my condolences on the death of your father/brother. I didn't know he was gone until we went to visit Mum (Dorothy) in the Snow Centre. I think this cruel winter has been especially so in the nursing home. I'm sorry I won't see you again Jocelyn, but I hope I hope regaining your regular life after spending so much time with your Dad is some consolation. I won't ever make pea soup again without thiinking of you. And hello to you, Elisabeth. I don't think I have seen you since you were in Saint John years ago to be part of a PWAC workshop and you stayed at Inn on the Cove on the West Side Before that I took one of your writing courses at UNB in Fredericton when you were Writer in Residence, I see your briother was survived by a nephew Richard Harvor and I fear he must have been your son. If so, extra condolences, you have survived the unsurvivable. As sad as your father's/brother's death is, I hope you are consoled by his useful and productive career as well as his great love for the earth and his family. Sincerely, Ana

We're thinking of you. At times like this our words seem a little empty but our hearts are full of caring thoughts of you. This is a time of remembrance, a time to reflect on the life just passed. There is comfort to be found in shared memories and there is strength to be found in fellowship and love which we had at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre for almost 4 years. When you remember these things your Father will be near you. The sound of your father's voice, the strength of his hands, the kindness of his eyes and the comfort of his presence. Your kind and generous spirit which blesses so many hearts is a tribute to your Father and his influence on your life.Thank you for being so kind to Buster and me.Sincerely Love Sandy

BoB Oechsler and Skylar Deichmann posted a condolence
Never met a man with more zest for life than Hank. Seems he was always up before dawn. Remember being awakened to the sounds of pots and pans banging around in the kitchen, the constant trek up and down the hallway, the mix of smells from the pancakes keeping warm in the oven while soup and stew brewed on the stove. As everyone who knew him knows, Hank was a people person no matter where he traveled, for Hank there were always stories to tell and friends to make. ~~~ The following was written by Skylar, Hanks thirteen year old granddaughter ~~~ There are not many people you will meet in life who are like Hank Deichmann (Grampy). Not many people in today's society can truly unplug themselves from everyday life, to go experience and understand nature. And enjoy it. He rose and fell with the sun, completely in sync with the outdoors. It's very moving to me, to have someone in my life, who had an impact on something that was important to them, such as he did. It really does make you realize, that you can reach your goals, if you are fully committed to them. He certainly got a lot out of everything he did, and he did a lot. With a long list of achievements, he will not be leaving us without leaving us a legacy. Although his passing is devastating, as is anyone's, the sorrow is temporary because he did something with his life. He used his life in a way that we all want to use our lives. All we're doing is saying goodbye to someone we knew, loved, respected, and valued; someone who would lend a helping hand where he could, and never did anything but good.

Just hearing the sad news of Hank's passing; when I think of Hank, two distinct memories come to mind - one of him at Anne and Michael's enjoying a wonderful roast of lamb (that I beieve he cooked) and explaining how good mint jelly is with it, and another of him telling us how to distinguish between a crow and a raven, and how cool these birds were. His enthusiasm and natural curiosity for all things living shone through whenever you talked to him and I will always remember his huge smile. He left quite an impression on me in those early years, and I am still marvelling at crows, and birding whenever I get the chance...hope you can find some comfort in the many memories he has created with you and others. Take care, Janet

Very sorry to hear of Hanks passing. My condolences to all your family. I remember him from when I was a student in Terra Nova. He was so good at sharing his enthusiasm and wonder about the natural world. And no matter if one pointed out an ordinary little bird or plant that was new to me, he always responded with interest and a shared joy of the wonder of wild things. A good man who will be missed by many.

Sad for your loss but fond memories of your father. As an interpreter your father was a great source of information and knowledge and always happy to take time and share it. As an ecologist/scientist I had a lot of respect for his great way of promoting and stating common sense conclusions, something not always well received in the bureaucracy of government. Definitely a man that loved life on his own terms. He will be missed.

We are greatly saddened to hear of dear Hank's passing. Hank was a great friend whom we shared many trips exploring areas of Gros Morne National Park. We also enjoyed so much of Hank's cooking and visited often with him and Joanne. Moments together are not forgotten, only cherished forever. Hank was an excellent biologist and he encouraged many, including us, to learn more about the environment and wildlife. We greatly enjoyed working with him as well as sharing good times. David Christie passed along the sad news. I have fond memories of working with Hank in Fundy National Park in the summer of 1978. Also - paddling with him on the Kennedy & Fowler lakes with Hal Hinds, and birding on several occasions in NB. On the Kennedy/Fowler expedition, Hank was much amused by the raid on my parents' freezer in Miramichi as we scavenged for provisions. He also credited me with flipping Hal out of our canoe into the South Renous on that trip! Once, I remember him driving through Jemseg on the TCH in spring flood. His eyes were on the waterfowl on both sides of the road as much as the road. He must have noticed that I was slightly concerned. He reassured me that this had never caused him an accident... I kept mum. I was more focused on the probability of future accidents... At some point we dropped in on his mom in Fredericton. I remember the house as a fabulous treasure house. The display of Victorian bird taxidermy was amazing. His mom insisted on making tea. She forgot to provide a teaspoon to mix in the milk. Rather than bother her, I tried to be discreetly resourceful. I pulled the refill out of a Bic pen in my pocket, and used the plastic exterior to stir the tea. As discreet as I tried to be, I got caught, and she was quietly appalled... I also remember dropping in at Terra Nova while hitch-hiking with a friend through Newfoundland, late August 1981. Mark provided a lift from Terra Nova to Gros Morne on his way to UNB. It was much appreciated. I'm sure many others have great memories of Hank's years. Please accept my heartful condolences. Nevertheless, a life lived as well as his needs to be celebrated not mourned. Sincerely, Ian Walker Biology, UBC Okanagan Kelowna, BC

Hank Deichmann has left us a great gift: his book on the flora and fauna of New Brunswick "Out and About in New Brunswick", a book that Thoreau would have applauded. As we turn its pages we feel that we are out there in the field with him, through the seasons and the seasons within seasons. So we have lost him only in one sense. We can find him again by plunging once more into these pages that invite us to become a part of the land as he himself was. Being introduced in this way to our wild neighbours we learn at the same time about who we are because this immersion in the flora and fauna that surround us takes us far beyond cities and towns and opens our eyes to our real place in the real world.
