Obituary of G. Margaret Ryan

It is with deep sadness, but with gratitude for a long life well lived, that the family of Grace Margaret (Ewing) Ryan announces her peaceful passing at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John on January 26th, 2019. Margaret was the daughter of the late William Colin and Mabel Regis (McDermott) Ewing and the wife of the late Ronald Joseph Ryan. Margaret (Marg) was a lifelong resident of Hampton. Upon her graduation from Hampton High School, she worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia until her marriage after which she devoted her time to raising her family of six children. Later, she resumed her working life at Canada Post in Hampton until her retirement as Assistant Postmaster in 1990. Throughout her life, Marg was an active member of St. Alphonsus Church, serving terms as President of the Catholic Women’s League and as a Parish Councilor. She was also a regular volunteer at the Dr. V.A. Snow Seniors Resource Centre and a frequent driver for Meals on Wheels. Marg loved exercise and the outdoors and, following her retirement, she enjoyed skating, practising yoga and Tai Chi, and taking long walks with friends. Her real passion was tending her flower gardens with loving care. They were a showcase on Main Street for many years thanks to Marg’s vigilant battle with Hampton’s deer population. For the past six years, Marg enjoyed life as a resident of Jubilee Hall at Parkland in the Valley where she made many friends. Marg is survived by her children, Anne Marshall (Robert) of New Maryland; Stephen Ryan (Anne) of Quispamsis; Fred Ryan of Calgary; Mary MacDonald (Barry) of Hampton; and Sheila Martin (Joe) of Hampton. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Richard, in 2015. Marg was one of twelve Ewing children and is survived by her brother David Ewing of Abbotsford, British Columbia. She was predeceased by brothers Leonard, John, Arthur, Ronald, Kenneth, George, Gerald, and Fred, and sisters Florence and Mary. "Nan" will also be greatly missed by her thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of the KV Extra-Mural Program and the wonderful team of healthcare providers and volunteers at Bobby’s Hospice for their compassionate care and support of Marg during her recent illness. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 4 - 8pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Hampton, 11:00 am Friday, February 1, 2019. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Donations in Marg’s memory would be welcomed for the Hampton Food Basket, Meals on Wheels or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
