Bob passed away peacefully at the Dr. V. A. Snow Center in Hampton on October 7, 2018. He was born in Saint John on March 11, 1940, the son of Bill and Jean (Donaldson) Odell. He moved to Hampton in 1972 and to Kingston Peninsula in 2007. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Margaret (Peggy) and four daughters Jayne Bettle (John) of Titusville; Brenda Sheffroth of Saint John; and Robyn Elaine Odell (Phil) and Marianne Winchester (Jamesee) both of Ottawa. Also survived by eleven grandchildren - Jason, Jolene, and Joel of Saint John; Josh (Thao) of Calgary; Melody (Dan) and Jordan of Fredericton; Jackson of Halifax; Samantha, Adrianna, Alecia, and Isabelle of Ottawa. He is also survived by three sisters - Ruth of Saskatoon, Barb of Spy Hill, Saskatchewan, and Iva (Tony) of Saint John. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers - Ronald, Allen, and Gary. Prior to moving to Hampton, Bob worked as a driver for General Dairies, Olands Brewery, Irving Oil, Baxter’s Dairies and as an owner/operator for Vet’s Taxi. He worked for School District 19 for 27 years as a bus driver, custodian, and maintenance worker retiring in 1999 due to ill health. During this time his family also ran REO’s Variety on Main Street in Hampton and Bob worked part-time at the Hampton Community Center rink and High-Low Farm. He enjoyed the people part of his jobs as he was very social and always happy to talk about sports, catch up on family, or help others out. Bob was a member of the Hampton Senior Resource Center and attended events and dinners there weekly. He loved music and dancing - from the sock hops at the CYO in his youth to modern Square and Round Dancing in his 40s and beyond. As a charter member of the Hampton Hoedowners Square Dance Club (1979) he travelled extensively in Canada and the USA to attend dances and conventions. He and Peggy attended a special convention in Bermuda in 1987 and the World Convention in Holland in 1992. They were both held many offices for the Hampton Hoedowners and served on the executive for the Canadian National Convention in Saint John in 2002. Bob and Peggy loved to travel on vacations, often combining family fun and Bob’s interest in sports too. They visited every province in Canada and the majority of the US states. Camping, in the true sense of the word, from tents to soft-top tent-trailer, small travel trailer, and a converted school bus - the family enjoyed seasonal sites at Darlings Island, Pirates Cove, Cambridge Narrows, and Pine Cone and Long Reach Campgrounds too. He was a fan of Disney World and made several trips there with children and grandchildren - especially enjoying taking two grandchildren at a time on 5 biannual trips to Florida. He also travelled to Europe several times. Bob was an avid sports fan. His love of playing sports in his youth formed many life-long friendships. He was a keen swimmer, canoer, and baseball player. In Hampton he joined the Hampton Expos, umpired ball, attended local sporting events, supported his girls and grandchildren in their sporting endeavors, and spent many hours at the rink (even when he wasn’t working). He was happy to attend sporting events with friends and family in Montreal, Ottawa, Orlando, Boston, and Toronto. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dr. Snow Center for the excellent care that Bob received while there. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11th, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 12th, 2018 at 11:00am from St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Gondola Point, NB. Interment will take place in the Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Kingston, NB. Donations in memory of Robert may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
