Obituary of Donald C. Lamb

It is with heavy hearts the family of Donald Charles Lamb aged 90 of Saint John, formerly of Nauwigewauk announce his passing on Wednesday August 29th, 2018 at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John. Born at Perry Point NB, he was the son of the late Percy and Mary (Clark) Lamb. Don is survived by his wife the former Annette (Meehan) Lamb, his son; Brian Lamb (Linda) of Hampton, his daughters; Susan Vail (Ed) of Lorneville NB, Dawn Savoy (Ed) of Miramichi and a step daughter; Debbie Bonnell (Ken) of Fort Saskatchewan AB, his sisters; Alma Erb of Saint John, Marina Lemon of Sussex, Helen Tayes of Sussex, 6 grandchildren; Ed Vail, Dana Vail, Joseph Savoy, Darlene Savoy, Kristin Lamb, Josh Lamb, 3 step grandchildren; Devon Bonnell, Justin Bonnell, Kendell Bonnell, 5 Great grandchildren; Emily Vail, Marcus Vail, Matthew Vail, Oliver Purdy-Savoy, Tyler Cramm and 5 step great grandchildren; Derrion, Drayton, Tye, Ethan and Blake. Don was predeceased by his wife the former Evelyn Carmichael, an infant son Joseph Lamb, his brothers; Willie, Fred, Murray and Percy, a sister; Marion O’Connor. Don Lamb was a passionate man in many of his interests and endeavours, especially as a proud veteran of the Korean War he always defended veterans in general and especially those in the RCR. Dad enlisted during WW II but unfortunately it was discovered someone had changed the year on his birth certificate, so he had to wait a couple of years to enlist. He never spoke much of his time in Korea until many years after returning to Canada when it was learned how badly the rigors of war can affect members of the military. He loved the military so much that after being released from the Army he decided to try out the Air Force. Don served as the president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20 in Sussex and was an active member for several years. Don’s civilian career revolved around automobiles especially Fords and there are many stories of him defending Ford vehicles and scolding people (including family members) for purchasing other brands especially those not made in Canada or the US. Don’s passion also spilled into his hobbies such as card playing, especially cribbage—he was a great player but if you were his partner and did not live up to his expectations you would most likely hear about it even if you were at a tournament!! Another passion earlier in life was stock car racing and he thoroughly enjoyed driving the small tracks in New Brunswick that have now gone by the wayside; he and his nephew Les travelled throughout the province to compete in races. Don also enjoyed fishing but as he told his son Brian (who was a game warden) he was not very accurate sometimes in counting the number of trout that he had caught. In his later years Don and Annette decided to become dog owners and he was very devoted to their dogs Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at 11:00am from Reid’s Funeral Chapel. The Royal Canadian Legion will be holding a ‘Tribute to a Veteran Service" Tuesday at 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Following the service everyone is invited to a time of fellowship and refreshments with the family at the Lighthouse River Centre, Hampton.
