Obituary of D. Claire Peddle
It is with heavy hearts her family announce the passing of D. Claire Peddle, formerly of Hampton, on Wednesday June 20, 2018 at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 95. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Eileen (Stanton) Butland. Claire is survived by her daughter Karen Belanger (Andre) of Hampton, grandchildren; Jason Belanger (Katrina) of Pickering, Ontario and Jasmine McCue (Tony) of Coleman, Alberta, great-grandchildren; Nathan and Carolyn Belanger and Jolie and Orson McCue. Claire was predeceased by her husband Ian, son Bruce, sister Marion Gotell, and brother Arthur (Buddy) Butland.
When Claire retired from Rothesay Paper, little did they know that their gift of golf clubs would begin a lifelong passion for the game. For twenty five years, Ian and Claire were "snowbirds", heading south when the Hampton Golf Club closed and returning in the spring for opening day. Competitive by nature, an extensive collection of trophies and medals are a testament to her mastery of the game. Her last game was played at the age of 93 and her last stroke sank a twenty foot putt on the 9th hole.
Aside from Florida travel, Claire and Ian enjoyed cruising. Although special anniversaries and birthdays were celebrated at sea, any occasion would do.
Claire appreciated music. She loved classical and choral music and the Canadian Tenors. The light opera of Gilbert and Sullivan was a favourite because of the lyrics, which she recited often as well as other poets including Shakespeare and Robert Service. The nightly ritual of washing dishes was always accompanied by poetry. The nurses on 5CS have been the beneficiary of many stanzas of late and a few toasts to accompany the glass of water that washed down the pills.
Claire was also a knitter of custom fitted socks and many of us have warm feet because of her skill. Claire enjoyed children and took an avid interest in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Although geographic distance prevented frequent encounters, SKYPE provided some interesting entertainment. Her sense of humour and grace will be missed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 27th, 2018 from 6-8 pm. Interment will be in Hampton Rural Cemetery at a later date.
Many thanks to the staff of 5CS for their excellent care.
