Obituary of Donald Richards

The death of Donald Richards of Hampton occurred on January 9th, 2018 at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John. Don is survived by his wife Myrna, his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Michael Keleher, grandsons Maxwell and Owen Keleher, daughter-in-law Genevieve Desmarais and grandson Xavier Richards, his sister Jackie Tilton, his brother Bob Richards (Gail) and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Edgar and Bertha (Bishop) Richards, Don was predeceased by his son Eric. Following high school graduation, Don attended the University of New Brunswick. Before graduating Don took a few years off and from 1958-1960 and was employed as a Meteorological Technician with the Canadian Department of Transportation working in a number of communities including Sable Island and Frobisher Bay. Don returned to university and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1962 and taught sciences at Belleisle Regional High School from 1962-1964. Don received his Bachelor of Education and married Myrna Tays in 1964. Myrna and Don then moved to Rothesay and started teaching in the Rothesay school system. From 1973 to 1989 Don taught in the U.B.B.S.J. and U.N.B.F. extension programs for B.Ed. and M.Ed. students. He was also active with the New Brunswick Teachers Association at both the local and provincial level. Don also served on curriculum committees for the Department of Education. In 1983 Don was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Hampton. He served in a number of executive positions including a year as club president. In 1993 he was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Hampton. In 1997 Don was selected to serve as team leader for the district 7810 Group Study Exchange team that spent the month of April in South Korea. In 2000-2001 Don served as District Governor for Rotary District 7810. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid's Funeral Home (506-832-5541) 1063 Main St. Hampton, where visitation will be held Friday, January 12th, 2018, 3-5 pm. Funeral service will be held from St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Hampton at 3:00 pm Saturday, January 13th, 2018. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Anglican Cemetery in the spring. Donations in memory of Don may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or to the memorial of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and donations may be made through ReidsFH.com
