It is with sadness, the family announces the death of Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Layton, age 70, of Hampton, NB, wife of Jack Layton which occurred on Friday, January 15, 2016, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. She was born on October 25, 1945 in Miramichi, NB a daughter of the late George and Kathleen (Hawkes) Blackmore. Betty is survived by her husband Jack, daughters Gillian Layton (Jason Lawson) of Oromocto, NB and Susan Layton (Marc Crossman) of Saint John, NB; son Christopher Layton (Tricia) of Hampton, NB; sister Saundra Ritchie (Gerry) of Miramichi, NB; brothers Paul Blackmore (Sandy) of Fredericton, NB, Drew Blackmore (Marie) of Vancouver, BC and Ray Blackmore (Linda) of Miramichi, NB; two grandchildren Abigail and Adyn; as well as several nieces and nephews. Betty taught at Champlain Heights Elementary School before being a supply teacher at schools in the Hampton Area. She is resting at Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541) 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, with visitation on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Funeral Mass, conducted by Father Stanislas Paulin, will be held on Monday, January 18, 2015 at 11AM from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Rothesay, NB. Interment will take place in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Golden Grove, NB later in the spring. Donations in memory of Betty may be made to Canadian Red Cross or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
