Rob Ward posted a condolence
To all the Thompson family, I would like to send my condolences to you on the untimely passing of Joe. As a teacher in School District 19 I knew and worked with joe for many years. I especially enjoyed working with him on the District Outdoor Education Committee and enjoyed many experiences, especially canoeing. I had great respect for him and his ideas and know that many others felt the same way. He will of course be sadly missed by you all and so many in the community. My wife and I send you our best wishes and want you to know that we are thinking of you during this time. Sincerely Rob and Sue Ward

Joe will always be Mr. Thompson to me, with his easy laughter and boundless energy. I got to be one of the last grads of HCS in 1975, and that year Mr. Thompson was our yearbook advisor and debating coach. He was hands on when we wanted and gave up full rein too. His faith, belief, and certainty in our success made us, and so many hundreds of others, succeed again and again, because he had instilled our belief in ourselves. So many thanks to all of his family for lending him to us so freely. He taught us so much. May God bless you all.

Joe's daily nutrition book stands out to me right now. I remember talking with him at length about why he kept up the routine, and for how long it had been...I had never come across someone who was so diligent in this regard. But more importantly, the conversation lead down a path of what I would learn to be a man of strong moral character. And I'll never forger, the opportunity to share a piece of his birthday cake on the evening Sarah and I got engaged in St. Andrews. We will both miss him very much.

Wanda, I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. One of my fondest memories of your Joe is at the Duffley residence on the West Side. Many many years ago. A beautiful summer evening. All sitting in the back yard. Joe strumming his guitar and Mary and I trying the sing Amazing Grace. We thought we sounded fantastic .... but it was thanks to Joe that we actually sounded half way decent. Rest in Peace, Joe. You will be missed by family and friends alike.

I was very sad and shocked to learn of Joe's passing and while reading his obituary, I realize how much he will be missed. His accomplishments and zest for life leave a legacy not to be forgotten. Wanda, you and your family, despite the grief you are suffering, must be so incredibly proud. On a personal note, when I think of Joe, I start to giggle, as I have a vivid picture in my mind of he and Willow, happily walking down the railroad track totally enjoying life. I also remember when Rosie, his beloved cow was about to deliver her firstborn, and Joe the attending physician, dropped in to our house to seek some advice from Jim. The first question was "what do I do Jim, boil water? There are tears in my eyes as I am writing this because I'm sure Joe & Jim are sharing farm stories in their eternal home. My thoughts are prayers are with you during this difficult time. May God bless and comfort you.

I was initially shocked and so saddened to hear of Joe's passing......However....after reading this tribute to him.....I cannot help but embrace his zest for life.....much of what is written about him either brought back many precious memories of my time as a student at HCHS with Joe Thompson as my teacher who truly had a passion; plus the wonderful stories my beloved sister Anne shared of her time under his tutelage with me...she was so happy that I, too, would have him as a teacher..... Reading about his other talents, interests, passions, love of small farming, family, the many journeys, to me.........make me feel warm....why?....because he left a wonderful glow and will live on through the memories we all will have to hold close to our hearts.....He is probably setting up a debate team right now.....and Anne Mercer will be involved....I am sure of that....<3 Joe lived and shared and contributed and enjoyed..... He had a Wonderful Life. You are in my thoughts and prayers........Mary Mercer
