Obituary of Lawrence Alexander Furlong
It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence Alexander Furlong announce his passing which occurred peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John, NB. Born in Nash Creek, NB on July 31, 1939, he was the son of the late Alexander and Marguerite (Lapointe) Furlong.
After high school graduation in Nash Creek, he was with the Air Force for 9 years. He then took a course at the trade school in Campbellton, NB, after which he worked for NBTEL for 25+ years, until his retirement in 1999. Settling in Beresford, NB, Lawrence and Thérèse married in 1978. Upon his promotion at NBTel, they moved to Saint John, NB, in 1979 before permanently settling in Hampton, NB, in 1981. There, Lawrence became an active member in the community.
He was involved in different ministries at the Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was a very active member at the Hampton Seniors Resource Center, first as a council member, then as the chairman of the board, and he also did a lot of volunteer work there. After his retirement, he initiated the morning music jam on Thursday mornings, where he MC'ed, played guitar, sang and was the leader of the band. He had remained heavily involved with them until December of 2023. During those years, he was also a part of the evening open mic.
He loved square dancing with the Hampton Hoedowners, where he held many positions over the years. Lawrence's other passions included: travelling, camping, learning new things, fixing things himself, going to his woodlot, and gardening. Lawrence treasured his immediate and extended family, as well as his many friends, all of whom will greatly miss his warmth, generosity and humour.
Lawrence is survived by his loving wife Thérèse Furlong (Cyr) of Hampton, NB; children: Christopher Furlong (Elizabeth Holden) of Oshawa, ON, Sonya Lavigne (Jason) of Salisbury, NB and Mark Furlong of Hampton, NB; granddaughter Searlait Ryan; sister Irma Ferlotte of Moncton, NB; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by his brothers James Furlong (Ruby) and Clarence Furlong (Phyllis); and sisters Irene Fitzsimmons (Willard) and Margaret Ross (Gerald).
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Extra Mural as well as Bobby's Hospice for all their excellent care given to Lawrence. Your kindness and compassion shown towards the family will not be forgotten.
