Obituary of Betty Bevans
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Betty Doreen Bevans (Sherwood) announce her death which occurred on Saturday May 30, 2026, at her home in Upham NB. Betty was the daughter of the late Stewart and Gladys Sherwood of Upperton NB. Betty grew up and spent her life farming and living a simple and beautiful country life. After meeting her soulmate, David Arthur Bevans in 1964 at the Saint John Exhibition, the two quickly became inseparable.
Within the year after meeting they had married, moved into their first apartment in Saint John, and had their first daughter (the late Marilyn Elaine). After the tragic passing of their infant daughter, Betty and David bought their first home in Upham NB. They spent the next 12 years growing their family and establishing solid roots in the community as they had their next three children and ran a take-out restaurant. As their family continued to grow and Betty became pregnant with her last child in 1979, they bought their dream home, their generational family farm that her grandparents built and her father was born in.
And it was here that Betty bloomed into the beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother to the heart and soul of our family. For the rest of her years, she lived the life of her dreams as a farm wife raising beef cattle for many years. Just a few years after moving into the farmhouse she had her first grandchild who lived with them and whom she became a second mother to. As her own children grew into adults, her home and arms became filled with her most beloved possession of all - her 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Betty was a gentle and quiet woman with a big heart and a strong love of her community and family. She loved hunting, playing cards, bingo, gardening in her vegetable or flower garden, mowing the lawns, going for drives on the side-by-side, Sunday date days going out to eat with David, their Friday shopping trips to Sussex, travelling on senior’s bus tours, watching birds at her feeders, spending time at Bevans Meadow camping and celebrating family birthday parties, and baking bread and treats for the steady stream of family who dropped by unexpectedly every day.
She was an active member of many local organizations and instilled a strong belief of the importance of giving back to your community in all her family members. She was a bus driver for the local school for 19 years and gave back to the school in many ways. She was a member of the ACW, Upham WI Hall, HRV Seniors and volunteered at St. Peter’s Anglican church.
Betty is predeceased by her parents Stewart and Gladys (Hanson) Sherwood, her two brothers Vaughan and Gordon Sherwood, her daughter Marilyn Elaine Bevans, and her granddaughter Ashley Bevans. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Johnston, her husband David Bevans, her 4 children: Carolyn Bevans, John Bevans (Candace), Paul Bevans (Kim), Doreen Bevans (Jon), her 12 grandchildren: Paige, DJ, Tyler M, Kaitlyn, Karly, Tyler S, Adam, Jayden, Tyler D, Devan, Ben, Allison, and her 10 great-grandchildren: Dean, Hillary, Cedar, Reid, Kenzie, Kayce, Layla, Harmony, Andrew, and Isaac.
She leaves a lasting imprint on our community and will forever live in the hearts of anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. The love she shared with David was something truly unique and special as they were best friends, inseparable soulmates and a true inspiration of what marriage has the potential to be.
