What a lovely lady! Shirley welcomed John and me to Hampton when we were still new to Canada, making us feel that could really make a home here. We knew Shirley when she and her late husband Hap came to St. John's, NL on several occasions to visit their daughter Dale and son-in-law Andy. We also stopped at the house when driving through Hampton. We have very fond memories of Shirley and Hap. We wish our condolences to the Bettle family.

I am so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing.She was a substitute teacher at hampton junior high when I was a student and we were all terrified of her.Later as an adult and getting to know her ,I laughed at how could we have been so scared of such a sweet lady haha .She told me we were there to learn .Shirley was friends with my mom and aunt and visited my mom when she was in palliative care ,I will never forget her kindness to us.Condolences to all of her family.

We were deeply saddened to hear of your beautiful mother (Shirley). She was such a beautiful lady and would warm your heart with her beautiful smile. Love seeing her come to the nursing home espically at Christmas and other occasions. She would light up the residents with her appearence. My condolences to you and your family, Mark, on the loss of your mother. I first met Shirley in the mid 70’s when I was teaching at Hampton Junior High and she was a regular and popular supply teacher. It takes a special person to do a job like that and your Mom did it well. I always enjoyed being in her presence. She was consistently cheerful and had a great sense of humour. To Dale, Davine, Mark, and their families,
Neil and I feel grateful for having been two of the many others who knew Shirley as a special friend. Shirley was the one who influenced me to become active at Hampton United Church, decades ago. It was just weeks after we first met that Shirley called and asked me to do some music with the Sunday School children.
I never knew that being on the Christian Education committee could be so much fun. Meetings were always at Shirley’s house. She would have a joke, a delicious lunch and before the meeting was over we would be happily volunteering to help organize a church activity, like an overnight camp for the junior Sunday School group.
As a friend said, “How can you say ‘no’ to Shirley when she volunteers so much herself!”
I will always treasure this memory; last December I celebrated my 80th birthday. When I answered the phone that morning, I was treated to Shirley, with June’s help, singing happy birthday to me!

Sending my heartfelt condolences to all of Shirley's family.She was a kind and generous person - a special friend to my Mom. I remember celebrating Canada Day at the Town Square. Hap and Shirley were sitting on the rock wall. Even though he had never met her, my grandson who was about 2, walked right up to Shirley and asked to be picked up. She lifted him to her lap and he was quite content. It was a sweet moment. Shirley will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
