I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr.Somerville. I attended Lakefield Elementary School throughout the 1980s, and he was the principal during my entire 6 years there.
While he was known for being firm, he was also fair, and he left a lasting impression on many of us. Looking back, it’s clear how dedicated he was to the students and to the school community. He helped shape an environment that so many of us remember with respect and appreciation.
I’m certain there are many former students like myself who carry those memories with them, and who are grateful for the role he played during those important early years.
Please accept my sincere condolences. My thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.

To all who love Dale: Sincere sympathy for your family’s loss. I remember the stories of Dale as a Brookville boy whose achievements were a source of pride for the whole neighbourhood. My sister’s first teaching assignment was at Old Black River Road where Dale, as Principal, was an encouraging, supportive mentor to staff. May you feel God’s love in every kind word and gesture received at this difficult time. Remember the love and cherish your memories. You are not alone - others grieve with you.

Vivian and Family,
I am sorry for your loss! I worked at Lakefield for many years and Dale was my first principal. He was an extremely dedicated person who devoted a great deal of time ensuring that the children were safe and secure. He had high standards and the school had a good reputation under his leadership. I do remember his dry sense of humour!
I did not know Dale in his later years but I do know that he contributed so much to his surrounding community. I’m sure he will be missed by many.
Sincerely Bonnie Williams.

Until you read some obituaries one has no idea what a great community leader and volunteer some are. Dale certainly was. The small length of time I experienced his skills and care was my daughter attended kindergarten, and grade 1. At that time kindergarten was private but was at the school . The beginning of a great opportunity for 5 year olds. And Dale was supportive of it. All good memories for me. Linda Watson

A wonderful man has passed - I spent most of my working life with him at Belleisle Elementary and then at Lakefield Elementary - It was a pleasure to work with such a great administrator as it made the schools wonderful to work in. He was kind, considerate,
thoughtful and a great mentor. I have only great memories and totally enjoyed the many years we worked together.
There are not enough ways to say what a beautiful human being he was.

Dear Vivian, Brenda, John & family,
I was very saddened to read about Dale's passing. I have many memories of him as my principal at Belleisle Elementary back in the 70's, and from when Mom (Elaine Hayes) babysat Brenda & John at our home. My funniest memory is when once a week I would get "called to the office," to pick up a key to take home for Mom & Dad because I believe their square dance club used the school gym every week or so. My classmates used to think that I was always in trouble because of getting "called to the office" so often! I was very happy to see both Dale & Vivian in 2020 when Mom passed and they came to the funeral home. I am thinking of you all and will be keeping you in my prayers during the days ahead.
- Kelly Hayes-McEachern

As a child I would spend time with Dale and Vivien, across the street from my dance classes with Patty Hebb. I always was amazed and a bit incredulous seeing Dale with his fishing hat on. It had thingies, probably fishing flies, hanging all over it. I'm sure it was a very useful place to keep them but I had to stiffle a laugh everytime I saw him in it. Such a fashion piece utterly his. Hugs to Vivien, Darren and Brenda. Sheryl Crowley

A giant in spirit and in contribution to our little town and beyond in so many ways, Dale was steadfast in whatever he undertook through a gentle manner. I was fortunate to have been on the committee he chaired that brought the JPHumphrey sculpture to fruition. I learned a lot from him on that project. He touched so many lives over his years. A full life, well lived and he will be missed and remembered by so many. My condolences to you Vivian and your family. I regret I cannot be there in person to tell you how much he meant.
