Obituary of Matt Johnston

It is with great sadness that the family of Matthew Owen Johnston announce his passing which occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Sussex, NB on March 29, 1970, he was the son of the late Karrl and Helen (Owens) Johnston.

Matt was raised in a large family, and as a young boy he didn’t like to work outside with us brothers, but he sure made up for it as he worked hard at Kent Building Supplies for 37 years. Matt had a brain for numbers, and he memorized many of the SKU numbers. Matt was a hard worker and was honest to a fault.

Matt loved music and spent many weekends logging the Country Music Chart Toppers. He loved his 2 cats Harlow and B. Also, he had a special place in his heart for his friend Scott.

Matt is survived by his brothers: Harvey Johnston (Carolyn), John Johnston (Louise), Corey Johnston (Karen), Manford Johnston (Janet), Lyndon Johnston, Newton Johnston (Debby), Allan Johnston (Debbie) and Clifford Johnston (Tania); sisters: Karla Kilpatrick (Mike), Krista Daley (Mark) and Kristina Watters (Dale); friend Scott Smith; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Matt was predeceased by his brother Gene Johnston; sister Pamela Jennings; brother-in-law Albert Jennings; and sister-in-law Linda Johnston.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB. Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, April 17, as well as Saturday, April 18 from 11am to 1pm. The funeral service will follow at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from Reid’s Funeral Home. A private family interment will take place at a later date at Hillsdale Baptist Cemetery.
