Obituary of Alice Downey
The family of Alice Louise Downey (Thompson) is saddened to announce her peaceful passing on March 10, 2026, at the age of 93 years. Pre-deceased by husband Damon McKay Downey (1933-2019)
Her favourite titles were that of mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was always happiest with a baby in her arms.
Born on May 4th, 1932, in Chatham, New Brunswick to Peter Loggie Thompson and Frances May (Green). The ninth of fourteen children, she grew up in a busy home filled with skating, family, and wonderful homemade meals. We are blessed to enjoy some of those same recipes today.
She is the mother of 7 children: Barry Short (Carol), Lynn Roy (Mike), Kelly Galbraith, Darren Downey (Tina), Lisa Pattison (George), Heidi Kelly (Tim), Chip Downey (Michelle), 26 grandchildren, and 14 (and counting) great grandchildren. Her home always smelled of fresh baked bread, and although some of her children and grandchildren are wonderful bakers, her pies still win the prize!
Alice became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1967. She served in many areas of the church over the years, but her favourite was that of a Temple Worker. She and Damon served faithfully in the Toronto Temple and the Halifax Temple.
Alice’s last couple of years were spent at the Kingsway Care Center. We are grateful for the loving care she received there.
