Obituary of Olive Hazel Smith
It is with great sadness that the family of Olive Hazel Smith announce her passing which occurred on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Barnesville, NB on January 22, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Catherine (Carr) Totten.
Olive lived a life showing kindness and care for others. She was blessed to spend her entire adult life at her and Kay’s family home where they enjoyed a beautiful life together. She spent early days dedicated to raising their four children, then enjoyed the blessing in later years of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Olive’s kitchen was always open with a warm welcome to share a meal or a hot cup of tea and whatever delicious treat she had made but most importantly time together. She had many hobbies throughout her life. She enjoyed spending time in the vegetable gardens and being Kay’s #1 helper in whatever needed done. The yard was always beautiful with her flower gardens adorning everywhere you looked. Olive could often be found in her kitchen baking and cooking, sewing and knitting including making tiny hats for newborn babies at the hospital, quilting at home or with the quilting club as well as socializing and finding new adventures as a member of Nauwigewauk Seniors. No matter what she touched Olive left things to shine a little brighter and taste a little sweeter. She will be dearly misses by all who were blessed to know her.
Olive is survived by her sons: Wayne Smith (Susan) of Nauwigewauk, NB, Gary Smith (Karen) of Smithtown, NB and Larry Smith (Michelle) of Lakeside, NB; grandchildren: Andy Smith, Tammy Ross (Craig), Kevin Smith, Jamie Smith (Melissa), Chris Smith (Devra), Jennifer Burley (Scott), Melissa Cameron (Thomas), Katelin Cameron (Chris), Nick Smith (Kaley) and Ben Smith; great grandchildren: Laura, Leah, Alex, Asher, Cameron, Roslyn, Avery and Oliver; son-in-law Bruce Cameron; sister-in-law Audrey Dodge; long time friend and neighbour Stu Fraser; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Olive was predeceased by her husband Clarence “Kay” Smith; daughter Julie Cameron (Smith); brothers: Ashford Totten, Hilton Totten and infant brother Rudolf Totten; sisters: Dorothy Totten and Mary Smith; sisters-in-law: Alice Totten and Joy Totten; and brothers-in-law: Norman Totten and Walter Smith.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 11th from 4 to 7pm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, March 12th, 2026 from Reid’s Funeral Home. A private family interment will be held in the Spring at Barnesville Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery, Barnesville, NB.
