In the mid 1980's Dot completed the Canadian Red Cross Visiting Homemaker Training program which covered "childcare, family relationships, home management and care of the elderly and convalescent". She followed that up with a Saint John Ambulance First Aid certificate.

Jack retired in the late 1990's and that enabled them to do some winter "snow birding" spending extended times in South Carolina and Florida enjoying swimming, golfing, canoeing and kayaking.
