Obituary of Anne McMackin

It is with great sadness that the family of Anna Gwendolyn McMackin announce her passing which occurred on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born in Amherst, NS, on February 24, 1954, she was the daughter of Chester and the late Esther (Briggs) McMackin.

Anne was born in Amherst, NS, but also lived in O’Leary, Newcastle, Halifax, and Hampton. She worked 41 years with Scotiabank, and after retirement settled in Hampton, where she remained fiercely independent and very much in charge of her own life, right up to the end.

Anne was a woman of many contrasts: warm yet blunt, loving yet no-nonsense, and occasionally a little negative – but in a way that made everyone laugh because she always said exactly what the rest of us were thinking. Her sass, honesty, and sharp one-liners became her trademarks,

She was also known for her incredible strength, especially through her long battle with cancer, which she faced with determination and her stubborn streak. During this time, she cared for her father while living independently, proving once again that she preferred things her way.

Throughout her life, Anne was never without a cat, or two, or three or four, who brought her joy, comfort and constant company.

Anne was a member of the Hampton Lions Club and the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

Anne is survived by her father, Chester McMackin of Hampton, who will miss her steady presence. She will be lovingly remembered by her nieces: Sarah (Shane), her great nieces Sylvia, Sophia and Sadie; Jessica (Jeremy), her great nephew Sam; and Racare (Dennis); all of whom will especially miss her sense of humour and sass; one son Andrew (Jonelle) and their daughters Ashlyn and Katelyn.

She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Esther (Briggs) McMakin; her brother Mike and sister-in-law Carolyn, all of whom she loved deeply in her own uniquely “Anne way”.

Anne will be missed. Though her departure leaves an empty space, we take comfort knowing she is now at peace – and likely commenting on the inefficiency of Heaven’s administrative processes with a smirk.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00pm, with a Lions Tribute beginning at 3:30pm. A private family interment will be held in the spring at Hampton Rural Cemetery, Hampton, NB.

Donations in memory of Anne may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Hampton Lions Club or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and charitable donations may be made through: ReidsFH.com
