Obituary of David Hawkes

With heavy hearts, the family of David L. Hawkes announces his peaceful passing on August 15, 2025 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness. David was born in Coal Creek, NB on July 25, 1933, the son of the late Robert and Ida (Paisley) Hawkes.

At an early age, David discovered an aptitude and passion for all things mechanical. David spent his professional life as a self-taught welder and mechanic, spending hours tinkering with and building imagined devices and machines for self and others.

Another passion of David’s was to tell stories of the adventures and people from his childhood and along life’s journey, usually with tobacco pipe in mouth surrounded by fragrant smoke. If you were lucky, he would adopt the voices or the facial expressions of those dear to him.

David will be sadly missed and mourned by his sons: Richard of Nauwigewauk, NB and Tim of Hampton, NB; daughter Sherry Alward (Albert) of Nerepis, NB; stepson David Kincaid of Saint John, NB. David will also be missed by his step-grandson Alex Alward (Jannelta) and step great-grandchildren: Cole, Xander and Paisley; his brothers: Robert Hawkes (Peggy) of Fredericton, NB, John Hawkes (Geraldine) of Coal Creek, NB and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his wife of 46 years Vivian (Kincaid) Hawkes, his son Daniel and brother Paul.

The family would like to give a special thanks to David’s partner, Ilean Northrup for her compassion and caring in David’s final years. The family would also like to thank the nurses and medical professionals of the Saint John Regional Emergency Dept. and 5BS. A warm shout out to the Sussex Extra Mural Team, to Dr Vance Anderson for his caring and to Dr Jessica Hemmings for her compassionate consultation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where the visitation will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at the Bloomfield Baptist Church at 11:00am.
