Obituary of Donald Marter McAlary
Donald (Donnie) Marter McAlary, age 81, passed away peacefully in his home in Hampton on July 17, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born and raised in Hampton, Donnie grew up with his younger sister, Shirley, and many friends around his neighbourhood. That close-knit community helped shape the kind and steady man he would become. Living here his whole life, Donnie was a self-proclaimed Hampton Historian and loved to reminisce about the town and its people.
Along with his sister, Shirley McAlary of Saint John, Donnie is survived by the love of his life, his wife Shirley, and his beloved dog, Lil’ Bear (“The Bear”), who was never far from his side. Donnie was a devoted father to four children: Wanda McAlary (Kevin Phippen), Greg McAlary (Karine), John McAlary (Shelly), and Christine Hawkins (Philip), and a cherished stepfather to five children whom he loved like his own: Kim Greer, Darren Greer (Tammy), Cary Greer (Holly), Tara Erb, and Trisha Erb. He had 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, and neighbours — all of whom brought him great joy and pride.
Donnie proudly served in the Canadian Reserve Forces (1958–1963) with Princess Louise’s 8th Canadian Hussars and was a volunteer firefighter with the Hampton Fire Department for 20 years.
He studied motor mechanics at Saint John Vocational School and began working at Kaye’s Garage when he was just 15 years old. In 1977, he began his career as Supervisor of the Hampton School Bus Garage, where he worked alongside “Vic and his crew” for nearly 50 years before retiring.
A passionate enthusiast of trucks and tractor trailers, Donnie was well known for the many lights that adorned his vehicles. He also cherished working as the mechanic on his best friend Gary “Sneakers” Hanlon’s stock car, back in his younger years.
A gifted storyteller and relentless teaser, Donnie filled every gathering with laughter. He greatly enjoyed watching western movies with Shirley at their home. He and Shirley took great pride in their beautifully kept yard, gardens, and ponds. Grandchildren have lasting memories posing for graduation photos under the giant maple tree that he planted many years ago.
A skilled woodworker, Donnie left his mark on every project. He had a unique ability to take a vision and translate it into precise architectural drawings. His handcrafted headboards, toy boxes, fireplaces, harvest tables, etc—each proudly stamped with his initials—remain cherished treasures in the homes of many family members.
Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Marter and Christine McAlary.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Fisher and his staff, Dr. Thompson, Nurse Candace, and the NB Extra-Mural Program.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB where visitation will be held on Monday, July 21st from 3 to 7pm. The funeral service will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025 from Reid’s Funeral Home.
