In these last few days I have been thinking fondly of my grandfather and reminiscing on our time together. I would love to share a memory of my Grampy from when I was younger.
For my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary they hosted a big party, this party ended up as a family reunion. As a kid we grew up nearly on the other side of the country from my grandparents in Calgary Alberta. My aunts, uncles and cousins were also sprinkled all throughout Canada. So everyone gathering in one place was a very special event! It was a wonderful week camping out at Grammy and Grammys house! We ran up and down the halls (much to Grammys dismay), played soccer and badminton in the backyard with our cousins, caught frogs in the pond on their property, and watched jeopardy with Grampy every night. I am sure the dinner and dance to celebrate Grammy and Grammys wedding anniversary was lovely. Although it remains more of a foggy memory filled with dress clothes, long speeches and cake to my pre-teen self. A memory that remains crystal clear in that week is when Grampy called me and all my cousins to come into the living room one afternoon. His tone was serious and we moved quickly. He gathered us around and gravely told us that his money had gone rotten and turned this odd brown/red colour…He then fanned out nine 50 dollar bills! I don’t think any of us had ever been given such a large sum of money all at once before! We all broke out in laughter and hugs explaining that the money never went bad. He laughed and assured us that this money was no good to him and handed us each a bill!
That is what it feels like to be spoiled by a grandparent. It was so exhilarating and indulgent! I am so lucky to have spent the time I did with my Grampy. I know that I am blessed to come from a family tree filled with such strong traits like generosity, determination, faith and hard work that my grandfather often displayed. His passing is a great loss as no one will ever be quite like my Grampy. However, I am comforted to think his soul is resting peacefully with so many of his family members back home with the Lord.
