Aunt Marilyn embodied many of the qualities we would hope to possess; devotion to family, church and community, a good listener, great sense of humour ( I will remember her laugh for the rest of my life ) and a way of making you feel special in her company. I extend my deepest sympathies to Uncle Jim and my cousins Diane, David, Scott and Ellen, and their families. She was the last remaining one of the seven children of Sterling and Aggie Downey, and so I wanted to celebrate her life and their lives and remember the privilege of being part of that extended family. New Brunswick has lost an incredible woman. Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years”. I think this quote explains Marilyn’s approach to her life. Lillian and I have often looked to Jim and Marilyn as our role models for our marriage and have instilled these same values in our children and family. We will miss her pleasant personality. My condolences to you Jim and the family. My greatest memory will always be the nite Marilyn kept my grand daughter Charlie for me so you and I could attend a Home Mission Council meeting. Neither had met before, but my Charlie had a wonderful time playing cards with Marilyn, and of coarse we played more cards when we got back from the meeting. What a gracious and welcoming woman. John and I count our lucky stars that we were in the right place at the right time to meet and to be befriended by Marilyn and Jim. We have so many happy memories of them and their children. Once I was to meet Marilyn and some of her family in a huge restaurant in Toronto. I had no idea how to find her then I heard her laugh. I smiled at the Maître d', he nodded and said 'follow me' and there she was! Love you forever, Marilyn and Jim.

To all of the McKenzie family - I'm so sad to hear of Marilyn's passing. I have such fond memories of her while growing up next door - oh so many years ago! I still have the tiny tea cup and saucer she gave me when we moved away to NS in 1990. Keep your memories close to your heart. She'll always be with you. My condolences to the entire McKenzie family. My memories of Marilyn include that great laugh, her wise advice and the gentle yet firm way she ran her household. I was lucky enough to spend many days and nights at the McKenzie house. There was always something amazing in the oven or on the stove. My best to all the McKenzie clan and extended family and Marilyn's circle of friends. I've known and loved (and admired) Marilyn since getting to meet her in my early 20s, more than 35 years ago! She has always been, to me, one of the finest examples of a kind, decent, fair human being, with the added advantages of being wise, intelligent and astutely insightful about people, somehow managing to keep best intentions at the forefront, but with the ability to put people in their place (when needed), spreading joy and love with good humour, a big belly laugh, and a mischievous touch of the wicked, all in the best possible way. I always found myself wanting to please her, like she was another mom to me. And I'm quite sure I'm not likely to be the only one who feels this way, as it was one of her great gifts to balance her treatment of people with equal parts respect and gentle expectations ;). I'm grateful she graciously included me in her circle and allowed me to learn from her wise ways as I've come and gone over the years. Thanks for everything, Marilyn! Rest in peace and love ~ Xo
